Millennials roughly are defined as the generation born between 1981 and 1996, which means they’re currently between ages 22 and 37. Not surprisingly, this generation makes up the largest population of home shoppers and purchasers of all generations. Considering the age spread, this demographic covers those most likely to purchase their first home, as well as those likely to sell their first home to purchase a more expensive home. Additionally, according to a the National Association of Realtors’ most recent ‘Aspiring Home Buyers Profile‘ report, of all the generations, Millennials find it the least difficult to save for a down payment. If you’re considering selling your home, you would be wise to pay attention to this demographic’s wants and needs in a home. With that in mind, here are five features Millennials want in a home (source https://www.nationwidemortgages.net/millennials-housing-market.html).

open floor plan

Open Floor Plan

An open floor plan means the main living spaces have no floor to ceiling walls defining them. This floor plan is appealing because it works really well for social gatherings and family engagement, and also feels open and airy.

Large Kitchen

Yep, they want an open floor plan, and they also want the kitchen to be the shining star of that floor plan. After-all, the kitchen is where everyone congregates. Consider this- the last time you went to a friend’s home for dinner, did you find yourselves hanging around the kitchen counter, island, or bar-top? Most do.

home office

Home Office

According to Forbes, as of 2015, the average worker in the U.S. telecommutes to work 2 days out of each month. Every year more and more Americans find themselves working from home. A home office is becoming a huge asset for this reason.

Energy Efficiency

Green features are a priority to Millennials. They recognize the importance of preserving our planet, and they also recognize the long-term value in energy efficiency. Think energy star appliances, solar panels, low-emittance windows, programmable thermostats, etc…

Move-in Ready

Millennials are busy. Almost half of Millennial home buyers want to purchase a new construction home so they don’t have to worry about renovations and maintenance issues.
